On Sept. 16, Verena Tiefenbeck gave a keynote talk at the 11th International Conference on Energy Informatics in Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany. In her talk “From Control Loops to Control Groups: Human Behavior and the Energy Transition”, she highlighted that the human factor will play a more and more important role in the energy sector, as the growing share of volatile renewable energies and limited storage capacity require more flexibility on the demand side. She outlined different types of approaches developed and tested by different disciplines along with their potential and challenges. The talk concluded with Verena’s perspective on the joys and difficulties of interdisciplinary research.
