Bachelor’s thesis

Procedure and Application – Bachelor’s Thesis

1. Application

Important note before you apply: If you are not enrolled in the Bachelor’s program in Information Systems (Wirtschaftsinformatik), please clarify with your respective degree program coordination in advance any specific requirements and procedures applicable to your degree program, including whether supervision by our chair is possible. This is often not possible for students from other faculties (e.g., TechFak or NatFak).

If you are interested in writing your Bachelor’s thesis with our chair, please contact one of the supervisors by email. Please use our application form and attach your CV, current transcript of records, and any other relevant documents.

You may apply for one of the advertised thesis topics or proactively propose your own research idea, provided that it aligns with our research priorities. In the latter case, please include a short but meaningful description of your proposed research idea.

If you intend to complete your thesis in the respective semester, your application must be submitted no later than October 15 for the winter semester and April 15 for the summer semester. As the number of available thesis positions is limited, we recommend submitting your application as early as possible.

Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered for the current semester.

During the first week of the lecture period, applications will be reviewed and interviews will be scheduled. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of that week.

We strongly recommend completing the Research Methods Seminar (“Forschungsmethodisches Seminar”) before starting your Bachelor’s thesis.

We generally prefer Bachelor’s theses to be written in English.

2. Initial Meeting

If the supervisor you have contacted has sufficient capacity, an initial meeting will be arranged. During this meeting, your proposed topic will be discussed in greater detail and, if necessary, further narrowed down.

After the initial meeting, you should familiarize yourself with the relevant literature and research context and prepare an exposé. The exposé should outline the relevance and motivation of the research topic, the research question, the proposed methodology, and a preliminary timeline for the thesis. Please use the exposé template provided by us.

The first draft of the exposé must be submitted within two weeks after the initial meeting. Based on the feedback provided, the exposé will then be revised and further developed in subsequent iterations.

3. Registration

Once the topic has been finalized, the Bachelor’s thesis will be officially registered with the Examination Office using the final thesis title.

Please complete the registration form and send it to us. We will review the form and forward it to the Examination Office.

4. Writing the thesis

Please stay in regular contact with your supervisor throughout the writing process. This will allow you to report on your progress, receive feedback, and discuss and resolve any problems that may arise. The frequency of meetings should be agreed upon individually with your supervisor and may be adjusted depending on your needs and the progress of your thesis.

5. Joint Thesis Colloquium

Approximately 2.5 months before the submission deadline (mid-January for the winter semester and mid-July for the summer semester), a joint thesis colloquium will take place. During the colloquium, you will give an oral presentation on your thesis, followed by a discussion and Q&A session. Feedback received during the colloquium should be incorporated into the thesis.

6. Submission

Finally, you will submit your completed Bachelor’s thesis.

Students of the Faculty of Economic Sciences should submit their thesis to the Examination Office.

Students of the Faculty of Engineering (e.g., WING or IP) should submit their thesis directly to the chair.

The thesis must be submitted in two printed copies and additionally in digital form (e.g., on a CD or USB drive).

The printed copies must follow the required binding and printing format:

  • cardboard backing in the WISO color (red) or FAU color (blue),
  • a transparent cover sheet,
  • a black adhesive binding between the cover sheet and the cardboard backing, and
  • double-sided printing.

Please check the applicable examination regulations for any additional formal requirements before submitting your thesis. If you are unsure about any aspect of the submission process, such as the submission location, required format, number of copies, or deadlines, it is your responsibility to clarify these requirements with the Examination Office in advance.

7. Final Presentation

Some degree programs also require a final presentation of the thesis results.

If this applies to your degree program, please coordinate the presentation requirements and a suitable date with your supervisor in advance.
